The majority of the west wall is part of the addition, which was added in the 1950’s. The back patio wall was built during the Nason Hall years and sometime during the 1980’s Mrs. Nason had brick laid in the patio area. Over the years, settlement of the bricks occurred and eventually as water drained off the roof through the canales rainwater no longer flowed away from the walls and instead began pooling against the walls.
The west wall has what you could call a “classic case” of moisture-related damage, which has been caused by the three most common issues… ineffective drainage, cement plaster and a concrete collar. (See the Adobe 101 section for more information.) Repairing this wall will require: addressing the drainage issues, removal of cement plaster, assessing damage and repairing damaged adobes.
Red tinted cement plaster visible in photo above was probably applied during the Miller time period. The concrete collar visible at the base of the wall was probably added during the Gibbons time period or possibly late in the Gonzales time frame.
